Canada Strengthens Temporary Residence Programs for Sustainability
In a bid to manage growing immigration demands, Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has announced new measures to balance the volume of temporary residents in Canada. According to Minister Marc Miller, “We are committed to ensuring that Canada’s immigration system remains fair, sustainable, and protects vulnerable populations.”
The changes include a 10% reduction in international student study permits by 2025 and updates to spousal work permit eligibility. These updates aim to strengthen visa integrity and tighten employer compliance to support Canada’s long-term economic goals.
Key Changes
- Study Permit Reduction: Starting in 2025, study permits for international students will be reduced by 10% to manage enrollment in Canadian institutions.
- Spousal Work Permits: Eligibility for spousal open work permits will be restricted to spouses of certain categories of students and workers.
- Employer Compliance: Stricter enforcement of employer rules to protect temporary workers from exploitation.
“We are enhancing compliance to ensure that temporary residents and employers play by the rules,” Minister Miller added. The goal is to manage the pressures on housing and services while still welcoming skilled workers and students who contribute to Canada’s economy.
