IRCC Approves Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core for Canada Immigration
As of January 30, 2024, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has officially approved the Pearson Test of English (PTE) Core for use in Canadian immigration programs, with the exception of the Student Direct Stream (SDS)
This addition expands the options for candidates applying through various immigration pathways, including Express Entry, Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs), and even Canadian citizenship applications
PTE Core:
The PTE Core is a computer-based English proficiency exam designed specifically for immigration purposes. It assesses four key language skills:
- Speaking
- Writing
- Reading
- Listening
The test is structured into three main sections:
- Speaking and Writing (50 minutes)
- Reading (30 minutes)
- Listening (30 minutes)
With a total duration of approximately 2 hours, the PTE Core utilizes both AI technology and human raters to ensure accurate and unbiased scoring
Key Features of PTE Core
- Quick Results: Test takers typically receive their scores within 48 hours
- Global Availability: The test can be taken at over 400 centers across 118 countries
- Flexible Booking: Candidates can schedule their test up to 24 hours in advance
- Vocational Focus: Unlike its academic counterpart, PTE Core emphasizes real-life, non-academic English skills
PTE Core vs. Other Approved Tests
With the addition of PTE Core, IRCC now accepts five language proficiency tests for immigration purposes:English Tests:
- PTE Core
- CELPIP (Canadian English Language Proficiency Index Program) General
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) General Training
French Tests:
- TEF (Test d’évaluation de français) Canada
- TCF (Test de connaissance du français) Canada
Scoring and CLB Equivalency
PTE Core results are mapped to the Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) system, which is crucial for immigration programs. Different programs require different CLB levels. For example:
- Federal Skilled Worker Program: Minimum CLB 7 across all abilities
- Federal Skilled Trades Program: Minimum CLB 5 for speaking and listening, CLB 4 for reading and writing
- Canadian Experience Class: Varies based on NOC skill level (CLB 7+ or CLB 5-6)
Implications for Immigration Candidates
The introduction of PTE Core provides several benefits for immigration candidates:
- Increased Flexibility: More options for demonstrating English proficiency
- Faster Processing: Quick results can potentially speed up application processes
- Global Accessibility: Widespread test centers make it easier for international applicants
It’s important to note that while PTE Core is now accepted for most immigration programs, it is not eligible for the Student Direct Stream (SDS). For this program, applicants should consider other approved tests
