Self-employed Program
Self-Employment Program
The Canadian government extends immigration opportunities for self-employed individuals possessing specialized skills. Applicants to this program must showcase their relevant expertise and the skills that have enabled them to maintain their self-employment status in their home country.
To successfully apply for this program, candidates must also demonstrate their potential to make a meaningful contribution in their specific area of expertise while in Canada.
The National Occupation Classification (NOC) of Canada provides a comprehensive list of career types that fall under the Cultural and Sporting/Athletic categories:
Cultural
- Painter
- Dancer
- Journalist
- Writer
- Musician
- Designer
Sporting Athletic
- Sports coach
- Athlete
- Referee
- Program leaders
This list encompasses a broad range of common skills. There are also many other skills and athletic specialties that fall under which applicants can apply for this program.
Applicants must meet specific criteria to accumulate points under the Comprehensive Ranking System (CRS). Candidates have a better chance of qualifying if they meet multiple criteria:
Work Experience
A minimum of two years of experience in the relevant field is required.
Education
Relevant tertiary education, skills, and qualifications in the area of specialization are necessary.
Age
Applicants must be between 18 and 35 years of age.
Language Skills
Proficiency in Canada’s official languages (English and French) enhances your chances. Proficiency levels are categorized as basic, moderate, and high.
Adaptability
This criterion assesses your potential to assimilate into Canadian society. While younger candidates are generally preferred due to their potential to contribute to the Canadian economy over a longer period, more experienced candidates can score well in other areas such as work experience. If you face any challenges regarding adaptability, we are here to assist you effectively.
The points accumulated from these criteria are aggregated to form a score, which is integrated into the online profile created during the self-employment program application. Those who excel in their respective fields receive an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for permanent residency in Canada.
The Benefits of the Self-Employment Program in Canada
A significant advantage of the Self-Employment Program in Canada is that it doesn’t impose net worth requirements. However, candidates must have adequate funds to cover immigration costs as determined by visa procedures.
Moreover, this program allows you to explore diverse career prospects, even beyond your current field of expertise. For instance, if you are a trained musician with knowledge and interest in sound recording technology, gained exposure in your home country, you can explore that avenue as well.
Furthermore, only two years of experience in your field are required to engage in cultural work in Canada.
